Art According to Wirt is a site devoted to improving arts education.

Below are curricula I have designed for High School Level Art Classes.  Each unit is complete with broad Essential Understanding, Questions, Objectives, Resources and Assessments that guide each individual lesson within the units.  Links on this page take you to more specific information and reproducible instructional materials.  You are welcome to use any resources on this site that I have created.  Visit the "Links" page for more resources.  That page is updated regularly as I find more useful art instructional resources.

Documentary and Commentary Unit
This topic contains 1 unit of instruction with multiple lessons based on the big idea that art can document and comment on society.
Assessments:
Formative Assessments
  • Monitor student participation in large and small group discussion and investigation.
  • Questions submitted and answered.
  • The teacher will conference often with individual students to monitor their progress on individual projects.
Summative Assessments:
  • Written Critique of the artwork
  • Group presentation of the artwork
  • Individual student research according to provided rubric
  • Final artwork in accordance to the rubric

Identity in Advanced Arts
This topic contains a year- long curriculum for an advanced art class based on the central idea of identity as discovered and seen through the arts.  Various 2 and 3 dimensional art projects follow teacher instruction and student inquiry.
Assessments:
Formative:
  • Monitoring of participation in small and large group discussions
  • Student/Teacher conferences on individual artworks
Summative:
  • Student/Teacher made quiz on artists
  • Individual research evaluation according to rubric.
  • Sketchbook assignments
  • Final evaluation of artworks according to rubrics.

Identity through 3D Design  

This topic contains a yearlong curriculum designed for a high school 3D Design course based on the central idea of identity as discovered and articulated through art investigation and creation.  The art produced in this curriculum includes a variety of sculptural media and processes. 
Assessments:
Formative:
  • Monitoring of participation in small and large group discussions
  • Student/Teacher conferences on individual artworks
Summative:
  • Student/Teacher made quizzes on artists and techniques
  • Individual research evaluation according to rubric.
  • Sketchbook assignments
  • Final evaluation of artworks according to rubrics.
