Lesson 1: How have artists used art to express their own identity?

Objective:

•The student will investigate how various artists have used their art to express their culture, personality, history, thoughts, values and ideas.
Picture

The Process:

* As a large group the class discusses how each one of these artworks could express something about the identity of the artist.
 * In small groups students will further discuss one artwork, investigate the artist by reading and discussing material in the teacher made artist packet.
*Each group will present their group’s artwork and report to the class how the artwork illustrates the identity of the artists, what symbols may have been used and what the artist is trying to communicate.
** Depending on class length students may need more time to work as small groups on a second class day before presenting to the class.

The Assessment:

Formative Assessment will be used through teacher observation of student involvement in small and large group discussions.
Summative Assessment will be used through the evaluation of a student made quiz questions about the artist their group presented.
